Book Review: The God of small things

🌿 What the Title Means

“The God of Small Things” refers to the little moments, emotions, and people that are often ignored but have a big impact. It’s about how small things—like a glance, a word, or a secret—can change lives forever.

This novel is about two twins, Rahel and Estha, who grow up in a small town in Kerala, India. Their family is part of the Syrian Christian community and owns a pickle factory. The story moves between their childhood in 1969 and their adult lives in 1993.

The twins live with their mother Ammu, who falls in love with Velutha, a kind and talented man from a lower caste. Their love is not accepted by society, and this leads to a series of tragic events.

The death of their cousin Sophie Mol becomes a turning point in the story. It causes pain, separation, and silence in the family. The novel explores how small things—like moments, choices, and feelings—can have a big impact on people’s lives.

It’s a story about love, loss, family, and social rules—told in a poetic and emotional way.

The story takes place in Ayemenem, a village in Kerala, India, and follows the lives of Rahel and Estha, twin siblings who are deeply connected but separated by a traumatic event in their childhood.

🏡 Family and Setting

They live with their mother Ammu, their uncle Chacko, their grandmother Mammachi, and their great-aunt Baby Kochamma. The family owns a pickle factory called Paradise Pickles & Preserves. Though they are part of a respected Christian family, they face many personal and social problems.

💔 The Tragedy

The turning point of the story is the arrival of Sophie Mol, their cousin from England. Her visit leads to a series of events that end in her accidental death. This tragedy causes the family to fall apart.

❤️ Forbidden Love

Ammu falls in love with Velutha, a kind and skilled man who belongs to a lower caste. Their relationship is not accepted by society, and when it’s discovered, Velutha is falsely accused and brutally punished. This shows how cruel the caste system can be.

🧠 Trauma and Silence

After Sophie’s death and Velutha’s punishment, Estha is sent away, and Rahel grows up feeling lonely and confused. Years later, they reunite as adults, still carrying the pain of their past.
